Everyone knows that home organization can save you time, money, and offer you a greater sense of well-being when you are in your castle. Organization allows you to run your house rather than your house running you—or over you. Still, home organization doesn’t always come naturally. Here are some home organization tips to point you in the right direction.
- Decide on a spaces function and purpose: Once you decide on how you want to use a space, then you can take steps to make it functional.
- Everything needs a home: Create specific spaces for tasks like homework, crafts, office work. This guarantees easy setup and much easier cleanup.
- Out with the Old and in with the New shouldn’t be just for the year: If you bring new stuff in, decide what old stuff needs to go out. Keeping this cycle in motion will keep your living space open and usable. Not to mention that if you sell or donate your old stuff you can gain cash or a tax right off.
- Use baskets: for items on lower shelves in cabinets, pantries, and cupboards. They are easier to slide out and get what you need.
- Reassess old solutions: What once worked well might not anymore. If your furniture is taking up space and has no use, think about moving it to where it will have use. If not, sell it or donate it and find pieces that will have use.
- Extra Storage Space: Your house might not have plenty of closets or storage space. Furnish your home with furniture that does have extra storage. Buy and ottoman that has storage within it. Use an attractive trunk for a coffee table. Look for dressers that have five drawers rather than four.
- Give Your Refrigerator Door a break: Putting everything on the refrigerator door from artwork to calendars not only creates a sense of chaos, but things like important appointments can be lost. Create a specific artwork and brag board in another location. Use a different corkboard for schedules and appointments. Sort reminders by urgency, or family member, or theme to make sure that everyone using it can see what they need to see at a glance.
- Label, label, and label: Bins and baskets are great for organization, but don’t forget to label them. Otherwise you will waste your time by searching through them. Find the label systems that allow you to reuse your labels and change them out easily.
- Choose glass or clear containers for staples: Clear containers will allow you to see at a glance if you are low on an item and need to put it on your grocery list.
- Keep your pantry organized: If you have a small pantry, designate what will be put into your pantry and then put the rest in cabinet. An overflowing and unorganized pantry can lead to overbuying or under-buying when you go to the grocery store.
